Here are 5 Tips for Staying Active in the Summer Heat
- Avoid the hottest part of the day. The hottest hours of the day are between 11 and 3. Plan your outdoor exercise either earlier in the day or later in the day.
- Hydrate before, during and after exercise. Plan to drink between a half liter and a liter per hour when you're exercising in the heat.
- Protect your skin with sunscreen and lightweight clothing that blocks the heat. Consider a hat.
- Go easy when it's hot and know your limits. Listen to your body. Children and the elderly particularly and those with pre-existing conditions are particularly at risk.
- Know the warning sings of heatstroke. These include fatigue, extreme thirst, nausea, headache, shortness of breath, rapid breathing, muscle cramping and just a general sense of lightheadedness.
